Step 5: Strategy - "A People to the bottle" OR
"a bottle to the people"
It is important early on to understand which business strategy will be employed. There are 2 main strategies, one is to drive people to your winery to tour, taste and purchase wines, a "People to the Bottle" strategy. The other is to utilize the 3-Tier Systems (Producer, Distributor, Retailer) to deliver wines to the retail and restaurant marketplace, a "Bottle to the People". These strategies are not mutually exclusive, and a "People to the Bottle" strategy may include a distributor, retailers and restaurants.
A "People to the Bottle" strategy requires a tasting facility or venue, staff and regular hours of operation open to the public. Both strategies have their advantages and disadvantages and should be considered carefully before investing time or money.
This is a very important decision, as distributors, retailers and restaurant must be convinced that you product will be of consistent quality, quantity and wholesale price before they will agree to market any of your wines. Arizona has only a few distributors that service the major markets. One should make contact with them prior to making a strategy decision.
